Bunny in a gourd patch
Acoma Diamond Star Design
by Juanita Marotta
Welcome to my website.
My name is Juanita Marotta. Most people know me as “Bunny”. I grew up on a farm in Burnett County, Wisconsin, lived in Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, Minneapolis, Tucson and Taylors Falls, MN. I have been lucky enough to call Green Valley, AZ my home since 2000.
I have been drawing or painting my whole life. After receiving a Master’s Degree in Botany in the 1960’s I wrote and illustrated a book on the wildflowers of Minnesota. I also began painting wildflowers and making floral drawings. Other artistic pursuits I enjoyed over the years included flower arranging, appliqued flower quilts, making miniatures and rug hooking.
Who would have thought that in my 80’s I would discover the art of gourd painting! After moving back to Arizona I attended a Pima Community College course on gourd art and was immediately hooked. No other medium lends itself so well to a combination of ideas, techniques and sheer excitement than gourds. I concentrate on using acrylic paint and am able to create bowls, patio strings, dippers, dolls, etc, all with the wonderful hard-shelled gourd. I’ve also included a page for my daughter Mary’s gourds.
I am a member of the American Gourd Society, the Arizona Gourd Society and the Green Valley (AZ) Patch. Please visit the following pages to get a taste of my gourd art, floral drawings and books. We recently published a beginner’s guide to decorating gourds. Please see our BOOKS page for details.
